Family Learning Initiative Endowment Fund

Parent ‘n Tot Meeting Place is pleased to announce that we have been chosen to receive the FLIEF Grant from the Department of Education, again this year. Two staff members will be implementing the activities and programs for this initiative beginning September 2008. Upcoming events will include a Story Sac Making Workshop, Children’s Library Activities and a Community Literacy Celebration. All current participants and families in the community are welcome and encouraged to attend.

United Way Funding

We are pleased to announce that we haven been chosen to receive funding from the United Way of Halifax to implement several new programs and services aimed at strengthening the skills of families in our community. We are very excited about some of the new initiatives that will be made possible from this funding; a community trading post, community and skill development opportunities for families, and the Bright Futures Project.  Thank you to the United Way for their support and we look forward to our new partnership.

Language Development (4Year olds)

The 4-year-old’s language will not be perfect. Therefore, it is important that you do not criticize mistakes. If constantly corrected, your child may begin to stutter or not say anything at all. Instead, answer your child or repeat what was said in its correct form without emphasizing the mistakes. Here are a couple of activities that can help enhance your child’s language!

    • Teach your child how to talk on the telephone.
    • Ask your child questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer.
    • Ask your child about stories that you have read together.
    • Teach your child the names of the parts of the body.
    • Encourage your child to use puppets to tell stores
    • Whisper silly secrets to each other.
